For technical hiring, an ATS needs a shared engineering pipeline, one-action scheduling of live rounds, and a way to tell whether those rounds were genuine. Six fixed stages. The onsite is the one that decides the hire, and the only one worth instrumenting.

Applied

Inbound from your careers page through the apply API, sourced candidates added by a recruiter, or a batch imported from a sheet of referrals. The card records which, because a referral and a cold applicant are not the same conversation.

Phone screen

The recruiter or engineering-manager call. Scheduled from the card, so the interviewer is assigned and the meeting link lives with the candidate rather than in someone's calendar.

Onsite

Your live technical rounds, whether they are on site or remote. Multiple interviews can hang off one card, each with its own report, which is what a loop actually looks like.

Offer, Hired

Terminal states with the history intact. If the person comes back in a year, they land on the same identity, with their previous rounds and reports still attached.

Rejected, and reopening

A rejection is deliberate and stays that way: a repeat application does not resurrect it. Reopening for a new round is an explicit action, which is what stops a strong "no" from being quietly undone.

Jobs as teams and roles

A job is a team plus a role, for example "Platform" and "Senior Backend Engineer". The role is snapshotted onto every interview, so reports stay accurate even if the req is renamed later.

Screen share is not the control it used to be. An assistant runs on a second display, on a phone beside the keyboard, or as an overlay deliberately excluded from capture, and the window the candidate shares stays clean the whole time. Why screen share misses it.

What should an ATS do for technical hiring?
Hold the engineering pipeline in one shared place, let any interviewer see where a candidate stands, make scheduling a live round one action, and connect that round back to the candidate. For remote hiring it also has to answer whether the round was genuine, which conventional tracking cannot.
How do you detect AI assistance in a live coding interview?
By correlating independent metadata signals during the consented session: AI desktop apps and browser AI tabs, coding copilots, local model runners with no network traffic, capture-excluded overlays, remote-control software, virtual devices, display changes and clipboard event metadata. Nothing is read from the candidate's code or keystrokes.
Does this replace a coding assessment platform?
No. An assessment platform judges whether the answer was good. This reports whether the session was the candidate's own work. Teams often run both, with the assessment tool hosting the exercise.
Can you monitor a take-home?

The report says a tool was active in a round where your policy applies. It does not judge the candidate. If you allow AI assistance in interviews, treat the finding as context. Candidates consent first, nothing is recorded, and no rejection is automatic.
