For technical hiring, an ATS needs a shared engineering pipeline, one-action scheduling of live rounds, and a way to tell whether those rounds were genuine. The six stages for engineering hiring
Applied, Phone screen, Onsite, Offer, Hired, Rejected. In practice, most engineering processes map onto this without any configuration at all.

Applied
Inbound from your careers page through the apply API, sourced candidates added by a recruiter, or a batch imported from a sheet of referrals. The card records which, because a referral and a cold applicant are not the same conversation.
Phone screen
The recruiter or engineering-manager call. Scheduled from the card, so the interviewer is assigned and the meeting link lives with the candidate rather than in someone's calendar.
Onsite
Your live technical rounds, whether they are on site or remote. Multiple interviews can hang off one card, each with its own report, which is what a loop actually looks like.
Offer, Hired
Terminal states with the history intact. If the person comes back in a year, they land on the same identity, with their previous rounds and reports still attached.
Rejected, and reopening
A rejection is deliberate and stays that way: a repeat application does not resurrect it. Reopening for a new round is an explicit action, which is what stops a strong "no" from being quietly undone.
Jobs as teams and roles
A job is a team plus a role, for example "Platform" and "Senior Backend Engineer". The role is snapshotted onto every interview, so reports stay accurate even if the req is renamed later.
Why the technical interview goes unverified
Take-home graded, assessment scored, scorecard filled in. The live round, where the actual hiring decision gets made, is a conversation with no record of the conditions it happened under.
Screen share is not the control it used to be. An assistant runs on a second display, on a phone beside the keyboard, or as an overlay deliberately excluded from capture, and the window the candidate shares stays clean the whole time. Why screen share misses it.
What to watch in a coding round
Technical interviews have their own signal profile. A developer's machine legitimately runs a lot of tooling, so the weighting matters as much as the detection.
Correlation is the point: a process hit alone is context, while a process hit plus a matching window title plus focus movement at the moment a hard question landed is a finding. What the signals can and cannot show
Being straight about the boundary is more useful than pretending the boundary is not there.

- Monitor a take-home done in the candidate's own time
- Tell you whether submitted code was AI generated
- Grade or score the quality of an answer
- Observe a second device that is off the machine and off the network
- Prove intent. A detected tool is an observation
Can
- Verify a live, consented interview session
- Correlate independent signals into a scored finding
- Produce a signed, timestamped report that holds up months later
- Put that result on the pipeline card where the decision is made
- Run alongside any meeting platform you already use
